Snowdon runners in race against train
This year's
International Snowdon Race has a couple of twists as it celebrates its 35th year with a heightened profile. For the first time since 1985 trains are set to be paused for a small window so runners can take to the track and follow the record breaking route set by Kenny Stuart. The 15 minute train delay means runners still have to reach the top in 59 minutes as at 3pm the route will close and the trains will run again. The route will then revert to the footpath, which has always been a longer way round.
Race Organiser Stephen Edwards has hopes of bringing the race back into the European Championships with the introduction of £600 prize money and plans for expansion. Being born locally Mr Edwards also sees the race as a source of extra revenue for the local population, saying "We don't want to forget the local community's annual support," he said. "The race is also very much about generating money for the local economy."As part of the higher profile an Elite field has been assembled with athletes from as far away as Kenya hoping to take part.
